Human Engineering

£4.99

Human Engineering is a short electroacoustic work for piano, loop pedal, and tape / player piano. Written as an accompaniment to a clip from Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera, the piece explores the relationship between human performance, mechanical precision, and recorded sound.

The work can be performed live by a single pianist using a loop pedal, or presented through player piano and fixed media. Its musical language reflects the energy and machinery of Vertov’s film world, using repetition, layered piano material, and electronic treatment to create a sense of motion, process, and industrial rhythm.

Human Engineering was written in 2023 and first performed by Steinway Spirio player piano at the University of Nottingham. It sits between live performance, film scoring, and electroacoustic composition, making it suitable for contemporary music programmes, film-music projects, and events exploring music and technology.
