Safeguarding Policy
Last updated: 20 October 2026
Every child and young person who learns with me has the right to feel safe, respected and encouraged. This policy explains how I look after that.
Safeguarding Lead
I am the named Safeguarding Lead: Paul Emmett. You can reach me at paulemmettcomposer@gmail.com. My phone number is given to families when they join.
Checks and insurance
- I hold an Enhanced DBS check, obtained through the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM).
- I am registered with the DBS Update Service, so my check can be kept up to date and verified.
- I hold public liability insurance through the ISM, with cover of £10 million.
Lessons
- In school: the school's own safeguarding policy applies and I follow it.
- Studio and home visits: parents and carers are welcome to stay, but do not have to.
- Online: a parent or carer should be close by, ideally in the same room.
- I do not record lessons, other than exam recordings described below, unless agreed in writing.
Photographs and recordings
- I do not take photographs of pupils unless this has been agreed in writing beforehand.
- A pupil's name is never used in a photograph, and names or images are never shared online without prior consent.
- I do not ask for photo consent at sign-up. I ask only when needed, and ask again for another event or purpose.
- Exam recordings: where an exam needs a video, it is stored safely on my device until the exam board has received the submission, and then deleted. I can send it to the pupil or parents on request. If a pupil is submitting the exam themselves, I send it to them and delete it straight away.
If you have a concern
If a child is in immediate danger, call 999.
- About a pupil or something a pupil tells me: I will listen, stay calm and not promise to keep it secret. I will record what was said, and pass it on to the right people, which in Lincolnshire is Children's Services, and to the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead where the child is taught in school.
- About me or my teaching: please tell me, or contact Lincolnshire County Council using its safeguarding concern route for people working with children.
- Anyone worried about a child: Lincolnshire County Council: report a concern
- NSPCC Helpline: 0808 800 5000 (Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm) or help@nspcc.org.uk
- Childline (for children and young people): 0800 1111
Confidentiality
I keep what pupils and families tell me private, unless I need to share it to keep a child safe. See my Privacy Policy.
Reviewing this policy
I review this policy every year, or sooner if guidance changes.
