Wassail to the Apple Tree was inspired by a Carols by Candlelight concert in the warmth of Boothby Pagnell church in 2024. It was a simple but joyful occasion: friends and musicians gathered in a country church, with soup and conversation in the glow of village life. That atmosphere of tradition and fellowship, rooted in English customs and the “old-time” Christmas, lies at the heart of this piece.
At the same time, the work acknowledges the struggles and uncertainties present in the world today . The text contrasts images of lanterns, orchards, and winter blessings with calls to open doors to those in need. The carol suggests that peace and community can be found in something as simple as offering bread, warmth, and welcome.
